HISTORY

Somerset Farm was built in 1834 and is located in Locust Grove, Orange County, Virginia. The property consists of 28 acres of pastures and woodlands, as well as 1300 feet of frontage on the Rapidan River. Outbuildings on the property include the original slave quarters, an old wood frame barn, a wooden lean-to and a large modern storage shed.

The interior retains its original heart pine floors and wood molding.

The house was used as a hospital during the Civil War. Charles R. Skinker, who served as a Captain in the Confederate Army, commanded a picket line for General Robert E. Lee along the along the Rapidan River and immediately around his father's home, Somerset. Evidence of Confederate trenches and stone battery placements still remain on the outskirts of the property.
